Why is ballet a foundation for other dance technique?

The dance world today includes a wide variety of styles, and whether you choose hip-hop, contemporary, tap, or jazz, there is always something new to learn.

Ballet technique is like a daily dose of vitamins—beneficial no matter your primary dance style. Even if ballet isn’t your main focus, training in this foundational form enhances your overall technique, coordination, body awareness, musicality, and more.

Some dance styles don’t always use traditional ballet technique—and that’s completely fine. When you’re grounded in the foundations that ballet provides, you’re simply expanding your skill set by learning new approaches. Recognizing the differences between dance styles only enhances your ability to develop and express your own unique style!

Knowing these opposing techniques as a dancer will only enhance your movement quality, enabling you to become a more versatile dancer.
So how can you use ballet to improve your skills in other dance techniques?

Take a ballet class at least 1-2 times per week if ballet is not your focus.

  • Learn the terminology used in ballet and notice when it appears in other dance styles to describe similar movements. Develop an understanding of how the techniques differ—for example, a ballet pirouette performed turned out versus a jazz pirouette done in parallel.
  • Use the class to notice imbalances between your right and left sides, and work to improve them.
  • Train your body and mind to become familiar with ballet musicality. Classical music is the basis for much of today’s contemporary music. This basic musicality will help you adapt to more complex rhythms in other styles.

Ballet helps keep the body strong and agile! It is the perfect tool to become a strong dancer and a great starting point for anyone of any age to get a jump start on their dancing journey! Call us as soon as you can to start ballet classes!
